How to Start Reading Comics — A Complete Beginner's Guide

Beginner GuideHow ToGetting Started

Comics Are for Everyone

If you've never read a comic book, you might picture spandex-clad superheroes punching each other on every page. While superhero comics are a huge part of the medium, comics today encompass every genre imaginable — horror, romance, sci-fi, crime, memoir, fantasy, comedy, and more. There's a comic out there for every reader, regardless of age, taste, or experience. The only hard part is figuring out where to start, and that's exactly what this guide is for.

How Comic Book Continuity Works

The biggest fear for new readers is "I won't understand what's going on because I haven't read everything before it." Here's the secret: nobody has read everything. Even lifelong comics readers have gaps. The publishers know this — that's why they regularly launch new series, reboot timelines, and create natural jumping-on points. When you start a new run or series, the writer introduces everything you need to know. If a reference to an old story confuses you, just keep reading. Context fills in the gaps almost every time.

Marvel vs. DC — What's the Difference?

Marvel and DC are the two biggest publishers. Marvel (Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers) tends toward flawed, relatable heroes dealing with real-world problems alongside their superpowered ones. Peter Parker can't pay rent. The X-Men face discrimination. DC (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman) tends toward more mythic, iconic characters — gods among mortals grappling with what justice and heroism mean. Neither approach is better; it's a matter of taste. And beyond Marvel and DC, publishers like Image, Dark Horse, and Boom! Studios produce some of the best comics being published today.
